God Bless the USA: Celebrating 40 Years
If ever there’s been a time in America when we need help, it’s now. Our country feels the pain of the crossfire of good vs. evil. There exists much negativity and anger in politics and beyond.
Hearts desperately need to repent and turn to Jesus. Now is the time to pray and ask our Lord Jesus to help and heal our nation. Our country's core problems stem from sin and its consequences.
We need to bless God with our heartfelt praise and pray hard for the USA. Amen?
Recently, Lee Greenwood’s perennially popular song God Bless the USA surged even more in popularity.
It came to our attention that 2024 marks the 40th anniversary of its release.
It's the perfect time to focus on a positive expression of faith, veteran appreciation, and patriotism in one inspiring song: Lee Greenwood shared in an interview, “'God Bless the USA’ is the song I always felt the need to write. I wanted to have something that would unite Americans from coast to coast. I wanted to instill pride back in the United States. The song represents my family, my community and those men and women who have paid the price for the freedoms we all love and enjoy.”
Picture it: In the back of his tour bus one night in the heart of the '80s, Lee Greenwood felt moved and wrote God Bless the USA. It has since become a beloved song of patriotism that beautifully expresses what it means to be proud to be American. The song itself was released 40 years ago in 1984.
It’s amazing how this year marks the song’s 40th anniversary. How timely is its message!
When God Bless the USA was first aired on the radio, audiences heard it and wanted to keep hearing it. It ultimately became the song for the National Guard of Tennessee and then the military. Next it was the song aired for President Reagan’s 1984 campaign. Fast forward in the time and God Bless the USA continues to resonate. It was the “anthem” of the Gulf War and brought hope after September 11. Time and time again God Bless the USA has been a song serving as a source of American inspiration and unity.
But God Bless the USA could have easily never been. It did not have an easy path. Lee Greenwood explains, “It took me almost three years after I got to Nashville as a touring artist, and there wasn’t any interest in releasing ‘God Bless the USA’ as a single record.”
But God had other plans for God Bless the USA. The song was surprisingly chosen to be a single in 1984 even though it had originally been cast aside. Lee Greenwood’s record company made the unexpected decision to release it as a single after all.
Lee Greenwood went on to explain, “When Universal made the call after they heard 'U.S.A.' on that album to release it as a single, I was just surprised. I think that if that had not happened, no one would have ever heard the song, and it probably would have just been one of those things in my discography that I was proud of, but it was more than that.”
Patriotism and veteran appreciation continue to remain important to Lee Greenwood. One reason for his patriotism is that his father was a veteran. He dad served in WWII; he joined the Navy after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. God Bless the USA is a song that serves as a tribute to all of the brave American troops who have served and continue to fight for our freedom. Lee Greenwood testified, “I wanted to put God first, because I’m a conservative Christian, and I wanted to make sure that God was honored in the song.”
In this edition of Unite the USA, we are excited to celebrate 40 years of God Bless the USA. Listen to the song sung by Lee Greenwood himself and enter to win an autographed poster by Lee Greenwood. (And, yes, we recorded it on our album, In God We Still Trust. We love singing it, too!)
May we as a nation hold true to the meaning of the song and may we turn our hearts to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Here's a cool backstory about this video: After performing Lee Greenwood met the U.S. Army Chorus in the tunnel at Nationals Park. They started singing impromptu an a capella version of his classic God Bless the USA.
God Bless the USA by Lee Greenwood
If tomorrow all the things were goneI worked for all my lifeAnd I had to start againWith just my children and my wifeI thank my lucky starsTo be living here today'Cause the flag still stands for freedomAnd they can't take that away
And I'm proud to be an AmericanWhere at least I know I'm freeAnd I won't forget the men who diedWho gave that right to meAnd I'd gladly stand up next to youAnd defend Her still today'Cause there ain't no doubtI love this landGod Bless the U.S.A.
From the lakes of MinnesotaTo the hills of TennesseeAcross the plains of TexasFrom sea to shining seaFrom Detroit down to HoustonAnd New York to L.A.Where's pride in every American heartAnd it's time we stand and say
That I'm proud to be an AmericanWhere at least I know I'm freeAnd I won't forget the men who diedWho gave that right to meAnd I'd gladly stand up next to youAnd defend Her still today'Cause there ain't no doubtI love this landGod Bless the U.S.A. How To Know Jesus
Question: How do Stacie and Carrie know they'll go to Heaven?
Answer: It's not because of what they've done or who they are. It's because Jesus lives in them. Anything good in them is because of Jesus in them. They know God and His love in a personal way. They've followed what God said in His book: the Bible. They invited Jesus to be their Savior and Lord. You, too, can know God. Yes, He really does love you!
Take His Word for it:
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. -John 3:16 (NKJV)For all have sinned; all fall short of God's glorious standard.-Rom. 3:23 (NLV)For God sent Jesus to take the punishment for our sins and to satisfy God's anger against us. We are made right with God when we believe that Jesus shed his blood, sacrificing his life for us... -Rom. 3:25 (NLV)That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. -Rom. 10:9 (NKJV)Understand that God loves you with infinite love! God is good, holy and righteous and we fall short of His perfection. So we need a Mediator, Jesus, who lovingly took our punishment for all our mistakes.
Believe that Jesus is God's Son that took your punishment. He took your punishment for all your sins (anti-God ways) and that He rose from the dead for you, __________.
Repent (turn away from) your sins (anti-God ways) and submit yourself to Him as your Lord.
Receive Jesus as your personal Savior and Lord. Talk to God and give your life to Jesus.
Pray from your heart. If it helps, pray something like this:
God, I understand now...You sent Jesus to share Your love and make it possible for me to be Yours. Please forgive me for all my sins. Jesus, I believe you took my punishment on the cross and that you rose from the dead for me personally. I turn away from doing things "my way" and ask that You rule my life, Jesus. I receive You as my Savior and Lord. I put my trust in You not in the things I do. I love You.
In Jesus' Name, Amen.
